About the course
GCSE Citizenship Studies has the power to motivate and enable young people to become thoughtful, active citizens. Students gain a deeper knowledge of democracy, government and law, and develop skills to create sustained and reasoned arguments, present various viewpoints and plan practical citizenship actions to benefit society. They will also gain the ability to recognise bias, critically evaluate argument, weigh evidence and look for alternative interpretations and sources of evidence. It gives students transferable skills and an insight into other subjects such as Politics, Law and Sociology.
The overarching theme of this specification is ‘How citizens can try to make a difference’.
This aim is supported by three content themes:
- Life in modern Britain
- Rights and responsibilities
- Politics and participation
- Active Citizenship (citizenship skills, processes and methods)
How it is assessed
- The course is 100% exam based with students sitting two 1 hour 45 minute exams at the end of Year 11.
- Each exam is worth 50%.
- Question types are multiple-choice, short answer, source based questions and extended answer essay questions.
