Curriculum

The curriculum at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace is designed to ensure that each individual student is educated and supported to succeed in the world today in line with the latest educational research. The Academy offers a wide range of very high quality academic and vocational courses. The curriculum for each Key Stage is outlined below whilst details of the subjects and examination courses currently on offer at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace can be viewed via the menu to the left of this page. Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) is delivered through a combination of the Tutorial Programme and also through the Academy's 'Thematic Days' which run during the course of each year.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum (Years 7 & 8)

The Key Stage 3 curriculum is followed by students in Years 7 and 8. Following their admissions tests for the Academy, Year 7 students are placed in tutor groups according to their score to allow teaching to be as closely matched as possible to students’ needs to ensure all students make the best possible progress.  To tailor this support further, students are placed in one of 8 sets for the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science based on further subject specific assessments of their current ability and aptitude in these areas.

All students study French in Year 7 and some have the opportunity to study an additional language in Year 8.

Design Technology includes: Food Technology, Textiles and Product Design.

All students study Physical Education for 2 periods each week and competition between Faculties and with other schools is encouraged.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum (Years 9, 10 & 11)

The Key Stage 4 curriculum is followed by Years 9 – 11. The Academy offers a wide range of very high quality academic and vocational courses. All students are given subject options advice, guidance and make their choices during Year 8 as part of the Success Pathways guided course process.

The Academy tries as far as possible to cater for all subject choices within the timetable, but if only a small number of students express a preference for a Key Stage 4 course it may not be possible to run the subject. Some subjects may also be oversubscribed, in which case students will be selected according to their aptitude and effort made in both Year 7 and Year 8.
