Humanist Visit

On 1st February 2013, the Year 8s were lucky enough to be visited by a member of the British Humanist Association. It was a great opportunity to develop their R&P knowledge on Humanism.

Humanists are people who do not believe in God, or an afterlife, and believe that we should spend the life we do have doing our best for ourselves and for others. Denis talked and interacted with the Year 8s about his Humanist views and how it differs from, and links with, different religions. Denis spoke about how he had been raised a Christian, but explained that, throughout his teenage years and after doing some research, his thoughts on religion changed.

Many questions were asked by Year 8s, which Denis answered willingly, with many thought-provoking answers. He spoke about why he did not believe in God, and how he had many discussions with his sister who is still a Christian! At the end of his visit, Denis kindly provided the Year 8s with some leaflets on the British Humanist Association, and a book on Humanism, which can now be found in the LRC.

Overall, the Year 8s had a good time meeting Denis, getting their questions answered, and boosting their knowledge of the values of Humanists. We would recommend anyone to hear Denis speak if he comes to the Academy again!
