My Brunel University Experience ~

Brunel’s STEM Masterclass (5th Nov – 10th December 2022) was a very insightful experience that afforded me an opportunity to bring science to life. Their teaching style was delivered purely through practical experiments that allowed you to learn new things about science and engineering in a more engaging manner.

The other students and I had the privilege to take part in workshops such as CAD (Computer Aided Design), as well as learn about the science behind gravity (using paper helicopters), how an oscilloscope functions and the strategic engineering behind building bridges.

In my opinion, the best workshop were the CAD and bridge engineering workshops due to the amount of new information that I learnt about each of them and how beneficial they are to the modern world. For example, CAD is important because it’s a way of creating something from nearly any material you want, using digital means. This can be seen as a less time-consuming as well as less strenuous method of design.

During the workshop we were able to design the first initial of our name that was then 3D printed into a keyring. The idea of using computers to create real life objects (with the aid of 3D printers) marvels me and makes me believe that CAD is and could be a very important feature in engineering moving forward in the future.

In addition, I also really enjoyed the bridge making activity, where we were given number of credits with certain components that would ultimately construct a bridge model. It would then be tested with weights to see how durable it was by measuring the percentage of distortion. This exercise enabled me to build teamwork skills and to try to accept everyone’s ideas even though I may not have approved with them. More specifically, I was able to work and be around new faces and with other intelligent minds to create a unique bridge structure.

Overall, I appreciate the school’s efforts in providing me with the opportunity to attend this six-week masterclass. I was able to build my knowledge on very important things in the world that I may not have known before. It also gives me transferable skills for science, maths, engineering, and computing to boost and build my knowledge on each of those subjects.

It was a pleasure to attend!
