Business Studies

Year 9 overview

 
Overview Autumn Term:
In Year 9 students begin their Business Studies experience developing their knowledge and building a foundation of key business terms. Students embark on a six week course of creating their own business (market stall) and creating a key USP. In order to allow them to sell their products at the Harris Market run at the end of the half term. Over the course of the first half term they learn the key skills which help them in their second half term where they learn about business structures and setting up a business.
 
Overview Spring Term:
In the spring term students build upon their knowledge of business structures and look at how marketing works in a new business. They develop this by analysing how different marketing strategies support a new business and its products. Students will also learn the fundamentals of finance within a start-up business, analysing basic profit and loss accounts and identifying different sources of finance.
 
Overview Summer Term:
In the summer term students look to develop their knowledge of how production and recruitment operates in a start-up business, identifying the key aspects of the employment process and basic production methods.
 

Assessments:

End of Unit Exams (25 minutes)
Short Answer and long answer questions, from stating definitions to Analysis of business strategies.
 

Homework:

  • Case Study based questions.
  • Glossary (keyword) building.
  • Research and article annotations.

Year 10 overview

 
Overview Autumn Term:
In Year 10 students look to build on the experiences and knowledge they learnt in year 9 by developing their own business events management company, looking at the core fundamentals of running events and marketing a business. In the second half term students begin to look in detail at how to grow a business and the reasons behind both internal and external growth.
 
Overview Spring Term:
In the Spring term students take a detailed look at the different marketing strategies utilized by firms looking to grow and expand their businesses. They begin to look at pricing strategies and source of finance which assist growth. Further to this they analyse different accounting structure for limited companies and how to structure and report financial figures.
 
Overview Summer Term:
In the Spring term students take a detailed look at the different marketing strategies utilized by firms looking to grow and expand their businesses. Year 11 overview

 
Overview Autumn Term:
In the Autumn term students begin Year 11 by looking at recruitment, selection and leadership styles in business. The students take detailed looks at different business leaders and analyse suitability for management of different styles in regards to business’ maturity. Students also complete a recap of finance where they complete the final coursework based unit of the NCFE Level 2 Business and Enterprise qualification.
 
Overview Spring Term:
In the spring term students complete their business understanding by developing their understanding of production and economies of scale within in growing businesses. In this term students take a profound look at how to maximise productivity and efficiency. In Spring two students also complete 3 written external examinations for the Level 2 NCFE Business and Enterprise qualification, all of which are 1 hour in length, these are focuses around Marketing.
 
Overview Summer Term:
In the summer term of Year 11 students recap the knowledge which they have developed over the previous year and look to at exam technique in relation to their 2 examination papers at the end of the year.
 

Assessments:

75% External written Assessment (2 papers made up of short, medium and long answer, 1 hour each).
25% Controlled Assessment (3 hour Written Report completed in year 10).
Coursework based unit on Finance.
External Examination 3 I hour papers on Marketing.

Homework:

  • Case Study based questions.
  • Glossary (keyword) building.
  • Research and article annotations.

  • Business outreach meet
  • Controlled Assessment local business research and interview
  • Business Speed Interviews
