Performing Arts
“Art doesn’t give rise to anything in us that isn’t already there. It simply stirs our curious consciousness and sparks a fire that illuminates who we have always wanted to be.” ~ Kamand Kojouri
The Performing Arts curriculum at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace has one central belief at its core and that is: ‘Arts for All’. This mantra underpins the vision for both our curricular and co-curricular offering, which has been carefully designed to ensure we develop our students to be well-rounded young people equipped with the necessary skills to thrive creatively. No matter their starting point, we aim to nurture talents and interests, broaden artistic experiences and fulfil our students’ cultural entitlement. Our aim, is for all students to not only develop and improve as performers and musicians, but to also develop their self-esteem, confidence and communication skills so that they will be able succeed in the future.
In Years 7, 8 and 9, our students study both Music and Drama, receiving one period of each per week, with performance skills and techniques being a central focus throughout their Key Stage 3 experience. Our approach centres on the enjoyment and engagement of students, while building the skills needed to become a confident performer and creator.
At KS4, our students are offered the opportunity to study both Drama and Music as part of the options process with both subjects following the Eduqas GCSE specifications. Our curriculum supports their preparation for further study Post-16 and several of our students pursue Performing Arts beyond GCSE level.
To complement the curriculum, we offer a large variety of co-curricular enrichment opportunities and outreach activities with our professional partners and Music Hub. Our instrumental tuition programme is open to all students and lessons are both partially and fully funded to remove any barriers to access. Our students regularly perform both in and outside of the Academy, and we have a fantastic reputation for producing inspiring and high-quality performances.
