Harris City Academy Debate Champions!

On Friday 3rd of July, five students from years 8 and 9 travelled to The School of Oriental and African Studies to compete in the English Speaking Union’s London Debate Challenge. The LDC involves state maintained schools from across the capital, representing their boroughs. It is the country’s biggest competition for KS3 students.

It was HCACP's first time attending the event, and the team were competing with some of London's best grammar and comprehensive schools.

The students competed in
three debates over the course of the day:

Proposing the motion this house believes that the UK should use Nuclear Power rather than Renewable Energy to solve our energy crisis.
Proposing the motion this house believes that reality TV does more harm than good.
Opposing the motion this house would allow the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport.

HCACP was then announced as one of two teams that had made it to the final, and in front of 10 London Borough Mayors and a host of ESU dignitaries, as well as 18 other London teams the team proposed the motion this house would make voting compulsory.  After some deliberation, the judging team announced that the team from Harris City Academy Crystal Palace were the winners, and 2015 champions.

The competition was of an incredibly high quality and the students were an absolute credit to the academy, debating wonderfully and demonstrating truly remarkable articulacy and understanding of complex issues.

The HCACP KS3 debate team are:
Ben Murphy 8AA
Tim Apologun 8AA
Charlie Fletcher 8SS
Anna Hancox 9CB
Amy Evans 9CB.
