An Afternoon with Mary Wilson

On the 24th February 2014 a group of students were chosen to see a show by Mary Wilson from The Supremes. Hosted at the Tricycle Theatre, assistant director Titas Halder prepared a question and answer session where Mary spoke about her early life, living with racial issues, and how The Supremes and other Motown artists became famous.

In the question and answer session she spoke about The Supremes and her relationship with Florence (Ballard).  After answering some questions, she performed songs from her time with The Supremes, including 'Baby Love', 'Stop in The Name of Love' and a song which was inspirational to her; 'I Am Changing' from the musical Dreamgirls.

I enjoyed the whole show especially when Mary started to sing because many of the audience members were dancing and singing along.  I enjoyed the question and answer session as well because she spoke about dedication and hard work.  Also, throughout the time she was talking, she showed us first hand pictures of other Motown artists she had worked with and who were around when The Supremes started.

One thing from the show that really stuck in my mind was when Mary was talking about how The Supremes became famous and how difficult it was due to the racial issues at the time.  She said 'We dared to dream a dream which was almost impossible'.  I thought this was very inspirational especially coming from someone who had clearly followed her dream and become very succcessful.

Overall, the day was a success and everyone enjoyed the show.
