Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh Silver

On the 27th of June 2014, twenty Year 10 students set off from school in the minivan to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award in East Sussex.

The weather was lovely and when we got to the campsite we set up our tents and cooked dinner on the trangias.  The campsite was run by people who believed in organic life, so we had to separate all of our waste so it could be recycled and use the compost toilets.  It was interesting!

There were other families at the campsite and children running around everywhere playing games, it was a lovely atmosphere.  We all chipped in to buy some firewood, which Katy used to make a campfire for the group.  We all sat around it in the evening and talked before we went to bed, which was really nice too.

The next day Lawrence set his alarm for 5:50am (which was earlier than it needed to be!).  We cooked breakfast, and then packed away the tents and cleared up all of the rubbish before leaving for the trek ahead of us.

When we got to the next campsite at about 4:30pm, we set up our tents and waited for the other groups to find the camp.  That night Katy set up another campfire and we all sat around and played games together.

On the last day, every single group had cow encounters!  My group were chased twice, but luckily the second time Nathan came to the rescue and started clapping and blowing the whistle to distract the cows while the rest of the group ran across the field!  Thank you Nathan!

By the last day, after 3 days of walking we were exhausted!  The weekend was great and a special thank you must go to Mr Leaker, Ms Portsmouth, Ms Gauslin, Ms Witten-Sage and Mr Maurice for spending it with us.  Duke of Edinburgh is a really great experience and the whole group thoroughly enjoyed it and made some brilliant memories.  I would definitely recommend doing it if you get the chance!
