Parents Survey 2007

Parent Survey Summary – January 2007

In Janurary 2007, the college commissioned our second independent survey of parents' views.  The survey was conducted by Kirkland Rowell Marketing.

Responses from parents of students at Harris CTC “reveal that the school has reason to be happy with its activities”.

  • Scores for all subjects mean they can be considered successful with French and Citizenship gaining exceptionally high scores
  • Business Studies, Religion and Philosophy, History, Geography and Maths all received significantly high scores
  • Even the three lowest scored subjects, BICT, Art and Design and PE can be considered successful
  • Parents felt that Business Studies and Geography had improved significantly since 2005
  • All but 2 non-academic criteria were judged to be successful with communication, discipline, homework and control of bullying gaining exceptionally high scores
  • Exam results, truancy control, developing potential, moral values, college facilities and teaching quality all received significantly high scores
  • 92% of parents rated exam results as either “good” or “very good”
  • Parents felt that communication, homework, exam results and careers advice had all improved significantly since 2005
  • Parents were happier about all aspects of how the college is run, when compared with the 2005 survey. Parents were significantly happier about extra-curricular activities, handling of complaints, how the college listens to parents’ views and how we help parents to help their child
  • Many parents commented about how happy and confident their child had been since coming to the college. Others described the teaching staff as “caring and approachable.”
  • The survey findings indicate that the college should judge its teaching and learning, Post 16, leadership and the overall effectiveness as “outstanding” – the highest possible OFSTED grade which the college did, indeed receive in our recent OFSTED report

Action Points:

  • Choice of subjects was the top priority for further improvement. Many parents were happy that Music and Drama will be offered in the near future. This change to the curriculum, coupled with a wider vocational offer at Post 16 from September 2007 should help to address this issue.
  • Despite scoring well, some parents did comment that the allocation of homework was inconsistent in some subjects. This issue has also been picked up by the college’s own monitoring and needs to be addressed.
