Developing Decision-Making and Issue Evaluation Skills for GCSE Geography

Given the recent assessment changes in GCSE geography, students require a sharp set of skills and competencies including analysis, interpretation and evaluation of geographical information. This is partly examined through interpretation of resources as well as “assess” style questions. The new tests will also require students to demonstrate decision making and issue evaluation skills on either pre-release or information provided at the time of the exam. As such, students will need to decipher technical language, data and information as well as recognise complex and challenging viewpoints. They will likely be asked to reach a justified decision.

This course will help participants understand the importance of decision-making and issue analysis skills within a framework of high quality teaching and learning.

1.00-2.00pm: Arrival, lunch and networking opportunities

2.00-3.15pm: Issue analysis skills, techniques and approaches.  Understanding the “toolkit” required to decipher complex geographical information and analysing options provided.  How to interpret values and opinions and handling pre-release resources (AQA).

3.15-3.40pm: Refreshment break and networking opportunities

3.40-5.00pm: Using issue analysis and decision-making skills in the test. Working in teams, participants will review the different styles of questions and mark-schemes, recognising how credit is awarded. There will also be a chance to mark work as well as suggestions as to feedback for students.
