About the course
Through learning about the past students are able to develop their own ideas and beliefs about the world today. History GCSE allows students to ask questions of the present through engagement with the past. It requires students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of different historical periods. Students make connections and comparisons between different aspects of the periods, themes and topics studied. They use sources to help them understand the past and evaluate different interpretations of the past. They assess the significance of individuals, events, developments and ideas in the periods studied. 

The GCSE course comprises of four units split across three papers. 

Paper 1: is a thematic study of migration to Britain over time from c.800 up to the modern day.

Paper 2: Part A of unit 2 is a period study of the Cold War, which covers the main causes of the development of the Cold War, the key crises and how it ended. Part B is a British depth study of Henry VIII and his ministers, which addresses his relationship with the nobility and its impact on Britain.

Paper 3: is a depth study of interwar Germany. Students will consider the legacy of war in Germany after 1918 and why Hitler came to power, as well as what life was like for different gro  ups living in Nazi Germany.

How it is assessed

Unit 1: (30%) Migrants in Britain, 800AD - Present. 1 hour and 20-minute exam.
Unit 2: (40%) Superpower Relations and The Cold War, 1945-1991 and Henry VIII and his Ministers. 1 hour and 45-minute exam.
Unit 3: (30%) Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918-1939. 1 hour and 30-minute exam.
