Virtual Learning Overview

HCACP is currently closed to all students except for vulnerable students and children of critical workers. We are offering a full virtual timetable for all our students and will be updating the website regularly.

Parents, if you or your child are struggling with accessing resources please email info@harriscrystalpalace.org.uk and we will get back to you asap. This will then be forwarded to the teacher who will respond to you as soon as possible. Thank you.

Microsoft Teams

During this closure all students will have a full timetable of online lessons, delivered by their usual classroom teacher via Microsoft Teams.  Full details of how to access Microsoft Teams can be found in our student guide to working from home (see link below).

Download our student guide to working from home

View our guide on how to use Microsoft Teams

When students login they will find classes, subjects and year groups are already allocated in MS Teams. Students should sign into Microsoft Teams at least five minutes before the live lesson starts and can join by clicking the link sent to their team by their teachers.

Students all have Show My Homework logins, but if there are any issues please email CheungK@harriscrystalpalace.org.uk and we will reset passwords. Here's a short guide to submitting work on Show My Homework. Years 7-10 also have access to Bedrock Vocabulary from home.

What is expected from me?

You will be expected to follow your Year group specific virtual learning timetable. A standard timetable can be viewed below. You will complete the work set in the lesson on paper and bring it in to show your class teacher when you return to school and you can stick it into your exercise book. The best way for you to manage your workload at home is to follow your timetable closely. We have reduced lesson length by 10 minutes to allow everyone time to log on and iron out any technical issues. At the end of each academic day you should still be completing at least one hour of independent study or enrichment. If you do not have enough, please email your class teacher.

How do I use Microsoft Teams to access my lessons?

All students have been given a demonstration on how to access Microsoft Teams. If you select ‘student home page’ from the Portal Links in the right hand corner of this page you will see a student home page option appear, you will then need to login.

Then click the ‘SharePoint’ button on the left-hand side and select ‘Teams’. You may wish to download the app on your computer to give you easier access. Please follow the steps below to access your live lesson:

  1. Once you are into Teams click on the ‘Teams’ tab (left hand side of the screen)
  2. Click on the 'Team' you have for each lesson – e.g. 2020-HCACP--MAT-B-11
  3. Now click on ‘Posts’ (top of the screen). You will find a link in this section pasted by the teacher for the subject timetabled below. Click on the link.
  4. If you have not been sent a link, please click on your calendar as your teacher may have added it there already.
  5. Click on ‘join’ and you should be in the lesson. You should now listen to the Teacher’s Instructions and follow the Instructions on the PowerPoint

Virtual Learning Expectations

Are you ready to learn?

  • You should ensure you have a quiet space to work in.
  • Make sure all other devices such as phone, games consoles etc. are put away so that you cannot be distracted.
  • Make sure you have the correct equipment ready for your lesson, pen, paper, calculator etc.

Are you engaged in the learning?

  • Students need to follow the lesson carefully, listening to instructions and explanations and should feel confident and comfortable asking for help if they need it (see below)
  • You should engage with the teacher and answer any questions posed to you either by unmuting yourself and speaking or through the chat function
  • You should ensure you are clear on which tasks need to be completed during and after the lesson and ask if you are unsure
  • You should submit all work within 24hours or according to the deadline set out by your teacher.

What do I do if I need help with my work in the lesson?

You can use the ‘Q&A’ or chat function in Teams to ask the teacher a question. They may not respond immediately but will monitor this throughout the lesson. Students in Key Stage 4 and 5 will often be taught using a scheduled meeting which means they will be able to speak to their teacher and ask for help but you should only do this at an appropriate time.

When writing a message to the teacher in the Q&A section please sure appropriate language and not slang. You should write as you would speak to the teacher in lessons. If you are able to speak in your lesson, please wait for an appropriate time to do so and use language that you would use in a classroom setting.

Communicating with the teacher

When writing a message to the teacher in the Q&A section please sure appropriate language and not slang. You should write as you would speak to the teacher in lessons.

Should I complete my homework?

You should still complete your homework set by your usual class teacher on SMHW.

What to do if something goes wrong?

If you cannot access the lesson for some reason please e-mail: info@harriscrystalpalace.org.uk with the details of your problem and someone will get back to you.

Managing your time

Should any child be unable to attend school for a period, we recommend creating a schedule for your son or daughter to follow. Having a structure that they can follow each day will help them stay focused on their education and provide structure for you and your household.

However, we are very aware that this may not work for every household or for students of different ages. Creating a bespoke schedule together with your child can be a great tool to motivate, empower and focus them. It also allows you to plan in any activities that are specific to your household, such as looking after younger siblings, exercise, helping prepare food and much-needed family time.

Please be realistic with your planning, and plan what works best for you and your family whilst giving your son or daughter the best opportunity to continue their education.

Safeguarding

For safeguarding reasons, teachers are not permitted to give out their telephone numbers but pupils will be able to email into the school, and the school switchboard will continue to be operational.

If during a temporary closure of the school you or your child need to reach us, our telephone number is 020 7622 0026 and our email address is info@harriscrystalpalace.org.uk.

The most urgent enquiries, including safeguarding issues for any vulnerable pupils, will be answered first. If your enquiry is not urgent, please bear with us if there is a delay in responding.
