English & Media

At KS3 students study an integrated curriculum. They have the opportunity to analyse a wide range of different text types. Drama and Media Studies complement the core curriculum, and a range of interactive teaching methods are used to develop essential Literacy skills. A reading scheme allows students to develop their interest in independent reading.

In Year 10 students study for a Double Award in English or English Studies.  This new GCSE allows students access to a wider range of modern texts and offers the possibility of innovative and active units of study such as: The Moving Image, The Language of Digital Communication, Spoken English Studies, English Literature (Drama and Prose) and English Literature (Extended Studies).  These units also offer teachers the opportunity to deliver the curriculum in an active and innovative fashion.  All students study four units over two years which is the equivalent of two GCSEs. The combination of units studied will be dependent upon ability.

In Year 11 students study both English Language and Literature and are exposed to a wide variety of texts. Students are encouraged to analyse the writer's craft, think independently and communicate their ideas effectively. Emphasis is placed on developing clarity and accuracy in writing, as well as essential oral communication skills. Revision sessions and coursework support are all used in order to help students reach their potential.

KS5 students are able to join a range of courses offered by the department: English Literature, English Language and Literature or Media Studies. Emphasis is on both developing Key Skills for AS/A2 examinations, and on fostering a life-long love for reading and investigation, the ability to think and work independently and instilling a desire and confidence to raise questions.

Extra Curricular activities include: The National Schools’ Shakespeare festival/Drama club, writing competitions, reading club, theatre trips, visiting theatre groups and other curriculum related visits.
