Technology
Subjects within the Technology Faculty are Design & Technology and BICT (Business, Information Communication & Technology).
We believe that all students at Harris have the right to a technological education, using state of the art equipment, leading to quality outcomes in D&T and BICT. This in turn ensures an understanding of the role technology plays in our modern society.
Each year we host The Harris Egg Race. Local South London schools are invited to take part in a day of technological challenges. The design and manufacturing skills of KS3 and KS4 teams are tested as they work with resistant materials, electronics, textiles and food technology. Recent topics have been the anniversary of 100 Years of Flying, the Pink Panther Challenge and the Lost Rescue (gutting fish and making water powered rockets).
We make an annual visit to the Clothes Show Exhibition in Birmingham, where textiles students get to see the workings of the industry first hand. The KS4 & KS5 Business groups have visited the Coca-cola factory and Thorpe park for an insight into how real businesses work and take part in role plays and organising events at the Academy. KS4 and KS5 students also attend yearly Business seminars to help them with their exam preparation. The KS4 Food group have attended a session at the local McDonalds where they were given first hand experience about supply chains.
The Design & Technology subject area runs a robot club aimed at introducing Gifted and Talented KS3 students to the world of engineering and working science. The BICT department run after school sessions where students can use ICT to improve their class work.
Technology students also excel at sports! Over the last four years, the Technology Faculty has won Sports Day three times, with many new records being set by Technology students.
