Every year, in March, we celebrate Science Week at Harris. This is part of the National Science and Engineering Week, a UK wide initiative in order to increase awareness and appreciation of Science. There are special activities and competitions for each year group, including, a special assembly based on a Science theme, the Animal Road show, ICT challenge, a Science quiz, a Forensic Science Investigation where students have an opportunity to develop their detective skills, a competition to manufacture and market cosmetics and post 16 lectures. Harris also enters a year 9 team in the Inter-CTC knockout Challenge which we were in 2007. The climax of the week is the Science Open Evening with a range of presentations and workshops that allow students and parents to learn about cutting- edge areas of Science and experience hands-on activities for themselves.
The Maths team every year participate in the Mathematics Challenge, the most able students from year 9- 13 are entered in the UK National competition run by the UK Maths trust. The achievements for the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematics Challenge are always excellent and students gain either gold, silver or bronze certificates.
