AQA GCSE MFL: Developing Skills for the new Speaking and Listening Exams and Success with Grammar and Translation

The first part of this course will focus on developing skills for the new GCSE speaking and writing exams and will cover French, German and Spanish. It will….

  • Explain exam requirements for the new GCSE speaking and writing exams for French, German and Spanish
  • Explore effective approaches to teaching mixed ability groups
  • Give ideas of effective classroom activities to build students’ skills in writing and speaking
  • Look into ways of encouraging independent learning to reinforce and consolidate speaking and writing skills

The second part of the day will help you make an impact with your grammar teaching and empower your students to learn key language structures effectively by:

  • Getting lots of practical ideas for teaching and reinforcing grammar in a fun, engaging way
  • Exploring a step by step approach to improving translation skills and motivating your students with translation
  • Take away tips for making the most of tenses in speaking and writing and getting your students to focus on accuracy
  • Discovering how to provide stretch and challenge for your A and A* students through grammar learning


Suzanne Zammit, Language Academy Manager & Subject Leader for Spanish at Southend High School for Boys, an outstanding grammar school, is an experienced AQA A-level and GCSE examiner and an inspirational teacher of both GCSE and A-level languages. Suzanne is well known for motivating her students in grammar and translation and she uses cinema and music to inspire and engage.
