Game Stores

High street video game shop Game is on the verge of going bust. With a predicted loss of over £18million for the last year. Game is unable to get hold of the latest and more popular games as suppliers opt to work with bigger supermarkets. Game has been struggling to compete with high street supermarkets and other online retailers as their prices are cheaper.

Game says “For the future, we are investing for a different video games market with new games consoles coming to market and customers exploring new ways of playing games, including digital, online and cloud based gaming” –Last September
Game used to be one of the stores first to get the latest games, but was it worth their customers paying more to get them on the day of release? We asked students at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace what they thought.

Would you prefer to buy a game in a store that specifically sells games or would you rather buy games elsewhere?
The majority of people said that they would buy their games in store as they have a “larger variety of games” and games are “easier to find”.

Do you think that it’s worth paying more for a game that has just been released?
Only eight people of the thirty six that we asked said that it is worth paying the extra for a new game.
Marielle: “If you buy pre-owned [games] you never know the profile saved on it and newer games are usually better”

How do you spend your spare cash?
No girls said that they spend their spare money on games and only two of the boys that we asked said that they would spend their extra money on video games. The majority of people said that they would spend their money on clothes

If Game were to close down, would it affect you?
Mark, 12 “I wouldn’t be able to get no games”
Ronnel, 13 “I would cry!”
Yildan, Year nine: “My brother will spend less money”
Imalaya: “No.”
The majority of the people that we asked said that they wouldn’t care if Game were to close down because there are other ways of purchasing games and for cheaper prices.

What do you think of Game’s prices?
India, 13: “It’s ridiculous”
Kai, 14: “Sometimes you can get a bargain”
Merajul: “It’s too expensive”

Most of the people that we asked said that Game’s prices are too high and they’d rather buy their games elsewhere because they can get it cheaper.  It appears that Game, along with other gaming giants such as Nintendo are struggling in the current financial climate, and while the future is “cloudy”, they may both become victims of the new file sharing phenomenon.
